NO WAY BACK WINS INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY OF THE YEAR

ATHLIX Studios has received its first international documentary recognition after NO WAY BACK was named International Documentary of the Year at the 2026 Anton Awards, held in the Dominican Republic on August 27.

The award represents a significant milestone for ATHLIX Studios and for a project that began with a simple idea: tell the story behind a promising young baseball player.

What the production team discovered would ultimately take the documentary far beyond the game.

NO WAY BACK follows the extraordinary journey of Venezuelan catcher Alain Gómez-Gudiño, tracing his story from his childhood in Caracas to his emergence as one of Arizona’s standout high school baseball players.

Through intimate interviews with Alain, his family, coaches, mentors and people who became instrumental in his journey, the feature documentary explores the sacrifices and decisions that shaped his path long before recognition arrived on the baseball field.

At its heart, the film is not simply about baseball.

It is a story about family, faith, migration, sacrifice, resilience and the unexpected power of people willing to help another family begin again.

Filmed across Venezuela and the United States, NO WAY BACK combines original cinematography, firsthand testimony, archival material, narration and cinematic visual reconstructions to connect different stages of Alain’s life and preserve experiences for which cameras were not always present.

From a Baseball Story to Something Bigger

When ATHLIX first encountered Alain, the intention was to feature an athlete whose performance on the field had captured the production team’s attention.

As conversations with Alain and his family deepened, however, the direction of the documentary changed.

Behind the athlete was a much larger human story.

His family opened the doors to memories of their life in Venezuela, the difficult decisions that preceded their departure, the uncertainty of starting again in another country and the sacrifices made in pursuit of opportunities that once seemed distant.

Those experiences ultimately became the foundation of NO WAY BACK.

Rather than building the film around statistics, championships and accolades, the documentary was structured in chapters that gradually reveal the people and defining moments behind Alain’s journey.

Baseball remains an essential part of the story—but it is no longer the entire story.

An Independent Family Production

The recognition is particularly meaningful for ATHLIX Studios because NO WAY BACK was created by a four-member family production team.

Working without the infrastructure of a traditional film studio, the family spent months coordinating interviews, filming, researching, writing, editing and assembling material captured in both Venezuela and the United States.

The project became not only an exploration of Alain’s journey, but also an important step in defining the filmmaking philosophy behind ATHLIX Studios: authenticity first, and the belief that some of the most powerful stories in sports happen far away from the scoreboard.

The team was unfortunately unable to attend the August 27 ceremony in the Dominican Republic in person. Instead, the four family members behind the production prepared a special acceptance message expressing their gratitude to the Anton Awards, Alain and his family, and everyone who trusted ATHLIX with the responsibility of preserving the story.

The recognition as International Documentary of the Year now becomes part of a much larger journey for the film.

Only the Beginning

The Anton Awards recognition arrives as ATHLIX Studios continues expanding the reach of NO WAY BACK and developing additional documentary projects centered on the human stories behind sports.

For ATHLIX, the award represents more than recognition for one film.

It validates the idea upon which the documentary division was built: that behind every athlete exists a story of people, sacrifices, decisions and defining moments that audiences rarely get the opportunity to see.

NO WAY BACK began with one athlete.

It became the story of everyone who helped make his journey possible.
