Following its International Documentary of the Year recognition at the 2026 Anton Awards, Dominican media turned its attention not only to Alain Gómez-Gudiño’s journey, but to the family, sacrifice and human story behind the ATHLIX Studios documentary.

Following its recognition as International Documentary of the Year at the 2026 Anton Awards, NO WAY BACK has received growing media attention across the Dominican Republic, with multiple publications highlighting a common theme: this was never simply a story about baseball.

Coverage surrounding the documentary explored the journey of Venezuelan catcher Alain Gómez-Gudiño, from his childhood in Caracas to his development as one of Arizona’s standout high school baseball players. But much like the film itself, the conversation quickly moved beyond the field.

Dominican media highlighted the family sacrifices, migration, faith, separation, adaptation and relationships that shaped Alain’s journey long before the awards and recognition arrived.

That perspective reflects the idea at the heart of NO WAY BACK: behind every athlete is a human story that statistics alone cannot tell.

A STORY THAT BECAME BIGGER THAN BASEBALL

Several publications traced the documentary back to its original concept: following the story of a promising young Venezuelan baseball player competing in Arizona.

As ATHLIX Studios became closer to Alain and his family, however, the scope of the project changed.

That realization ultimately shaped the film's chapter-driven structure and shifted its focus away from statistics and athletic accomplishments alone.

Through intimate interviews, original footage and the voices of family members, coaches and mentors, NO WAY BACK became a portrait of the people and decisions surrounding one young athlete's pursuit of an opportunity.

It was precisely that human dimension that repeatedly emerged throughout the Dominican coverage.

“We discovered that baseball was only the visible part of something much greater: childhood in Caracas, migration, faith, sacrifice, separation, adaptation, and people who chose to believe in him before the recognition arrived.”

THE FAMILY BEHIND THE FILM BECAME PART OF THE STORY.

The media attention also revealed another layer of NO WAY BACK: the unconventional team behind its production.

Dominican publications highlighted how Rafael Ocando, his wife Lily, and their children Rafael Eduardo and Lucía worked together throughout the filmmaking process, taking on responsibilities across production, interviews, editing, music,

logistics and creative development.

What began as the effort to document another family's journey gradually became a family journey of its own.

Months of learning, filming, problem-solving and late nights became part of the story behind the story.

For ATHLIX Studios, that family dynamic ultimately became an advantage. Telling Alain's story required understanding the sacrifices parents make for their children, the dreams families carry together and the importance of those who choose to believe in someone before success makes that belief easy.

A PHILOSOPHY BEYOND THE FINAL SCORE

The Dominican coverage also introduced audiences to the broader vision behind ATHLIX Studios.

One statement shared throughout the media coverage captured that philosophy:

“ATHLIX seeks to transform experiences into cinematic stories capable of remaining long after the game is over.”

That principle has become central to the studio's approach to sports storytelling.

NO WAY BACK follows an athlete, but its subjects are also family, migration, faith, opportunity, sacrifice, resilience and community.

The field provides the setting.

The people provide the story.

FROM RECOGNITION TO A NEW BEGINNING

The 2026 Anton Awards recognition in the Dominican Republic represented an important milestone for NO WAY BACK, but the filmmakers described it to Dominican media as something else as well: a starting point.

“The recognition represents a starting point for our company's vision: to discover and preserve extraordinary human stories that exist behind athletes. It is an encouragement for which we are grateful to the awards committee and to the Dominican Republic.”

That momentum is now carrying the documentary into new spaces.

NO WAY BACK has been submitted for consideration at the 42nd IDA Documentary Awards, while the experience of creating the film has also begun inspiring new storytelling projects within ATHLIX Studios.

Among them is Mateo, a children's story inspired by Alain's journey and being developed for young audiences ages 4–8, preserving themes of family, faith, effort, adaptation and perseverance through a children's book and animated concept.

A STORY THAT CONTINUES TO TRAVEL

Perhaps the most significant part of the Dominican media response is that the conversation surrounding NO WAY BACK has expanded beyond the award itself.

The coverage has introduced new audiences to Alain's journey, the people who helped shape it and the family that chose to preserve it on film.

A story that began in Venezuela, continued in the United States and received international recognition in the Dominican Republic is now finding its way to audiences beyond all three.

For ATHLIX Studios, that is precisely what the journey was meant to accomplish.

The game may introduce the athlete. The story reveals the person.
